Club coach Craig Moore explains a technique in club (in the earlier age brackets, normally 12U-16U) to cultivate the best players: split up the strongest players into two teams so that games and practices are always competitive. In most clubs in the younger age groups, there is one dominant team and the rest of the teams play at a significantly lower level. This often results in those top players never being challenged by fellow club teams unless they scrimmage against higher age groups. Moore admits he's gotten pushback about this strategy from both parents and coaches, but says it always pays off in the end.
