Mike Houlihan of UMass Boston talks about a middle blocker's timing. Most middle blockers, Houlihan explains, are late to the block. Training them to arrive earlier to the block means a higher blocking percentage. Middle blockers have a difficult job, having to move dynamically left and right, pull off the net quickly and make quick decisions. Putting some of that decision-making burden on the pin blockers relieves some pressure for the middle blocker.
